No one likes to listen to feedback or an echo while someone speaks and it isn’t very much fun to dance to music that sounds like it is coming out of a speaker phone circa 1999. Always run an audio test before starting a Zoom party! I recommend logging in with all virtual event co-hosts around 15 minutes before the event is scheduled to start to perform audio testing and ensure everything is working properly before admitting participants into the Zoom room.

If you cannot hear any audio during the sound check, try the following:

1. Make sure your computer speakers are on/not muted. (Look for your computer’s audio controls and turn up the volume.)
2. If your speakers appear to be on and the volume is up, but you still cannot hear the audio, check Zoom’s audio settings and select a new speaker. Click the upward arrow to the right of the Mute button at the bottom of the Zoom window. Choose another speaker from the speaker selection list and try the audio test again. If you do not see a speaker listed, this means your computer does not have any speakers connected. You will need to plug in a headset or external speaker.

If participants cannot hear you during the sound check, try the following:

1. Make sure you have the right microphone selected (e.g. maybe you are talking into your laptop’s mic, but Zoom is picking up an external mic nearby). To select a different microphone, click the upward arrow to the right of the Mute button at the bottom of the Zoom window. Choose another microphone from the microphone selection list and try the audio test again.
2. If you do not see a microphone listed, this means your computer does not have an internal microphone and you do not have another mic plugged in. You will need to plug in an external microphone/headset.

If your audio sounds muffled or distorted try the following:

1. Use a different microphone (AirPods, headsets or external USB microphones work great)
2. If you do not have another mic, click the upward arrow to the right of the Mute button at the bottom of the Zoom window and choose “Switch to Phone Audio Call” from the drop-down list. Follow the prompts on the next screen to dial in via telephone. Once you’ve completed these steps, you will be able to speak and listen through your phone’s mic and speakers.

A poor internet connection will make for a poor experience so you want to be sure you are doing everything possible to ensure the internet connection for your virtual event is the best it can possibly be. Here are some tips for getting a better internet connection:

1. Try moving closer to your wireless router (for example, if you are downstairs and the router is upstairs, move upstairs into the same room as the router)
2. Try plugging your Ethernet cable directly into your computer (rather than into the wireless router)
